THE APPLICATION PROCESS

Filing an application for disability benefits with the Social Security Administration can be very confusing and often frustrating. The first step in the Social Security application process is determining whether you are eligible for SSDI or SSI benefits based on the qualification criteria and strict definition of disability as provided by the Social Security Administration.

You can submit your initial stage application for Social Security benefits in any of the three ways listed below:

1. We have found that the most reliable way to file for disability is by calling Social Security’s national number. When you call it is an automated system, follow the prompts to apply for Social Security benefits. You will be able to set up either a phone appointment or an in person appointment. If you are unable to travel to your local Social Security office, you should request a telephone interview to apply for benefits. You may call Social Security's Toll Free Number : 1-800-772-1213. When you call it is an automated system. To apply for benefits say, "I want to file a claim." You will be able to set up either a phone appointment or an in-person appointment. During the Covid-19 pandemic, offices are closed and applications are taken via phone.

2. Visit Social Security’s website, ssa.gov and choose apply for benefits. You may apply on the internet for Retirement, Survivors, Disability Insurance (RSDI); Limited SSI claims can be entered on the internet (iClaim). The iSSI application will only be available for claimants who meet the following criteria - 

  • Allege disability, but not blindness;

  • Age 18 through 64;

  • Never Married

  • U.S. Citizens and residents of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

You must have a phone or in-person interview if the above information does not apply to your circumstance.

3. Go into your local Social Security office
